Computing and Equipment Use Policies

These policies include those involving computer use, fax service, printing and photocopying malfunction, and network access in the Library.

Guest/Public Access to Computers

The Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton provides computer access to the public, free of charge, for research and educational use. Members of the public are welcome to use either of the two computers designated as "Guest Computers." These computers are located on the First Floor in the Pro Deo Room. Use of other computers in the building is limited to students, faculty, and staff of the University of Scranton. Attempts to use computers not designated for Guests will result in the loss of access to the Guest Computers.

Guest Computers are connected to a timer, and will ask the user to log on for each use. Guests will be asked to register once a year by filling out a form at the Library Services Desk. Use of Guest Computers is limited to two hours per day (in one or multiple sessions) during regular library hours. Guest Computers provide limited applications, and downloading additional software programs of any kind is not permitted. Attempting to circumvent the computer timing software (including trying to access another user’s account) will result in the loss of access to the Guest Computers.

University guests use the Internet and Guest Computers at their own risk. The University assumes no responsibility and shall have no liability for any direct, indirect or consequential damages arising from use of its computer equipment or from its connection to the Internet. In addition, The University assumes no liability or responsibility for any and all damage arising out of or attributed to use of the Weinberg Memorial Library's computers, including but not limited to a user's portable storage device or for loss of data.

Any use of computers and electronic information in violation of civil or criminal law at the federal, state, or local levels is strictly prohibited. Examples of such use includes but is not limited to: receiving, transmitting or downloading pornographic materials; uploading a worm, virus or any other harmful form of programming; participating in “hacking” or any form of unauthorized access to other computers, networks, or information systems; infringing copyrights; promoting a pyramid scheme; and making bomb or other threats.

Guests registering for computer use agree to abide by these policies.
