Alpha Mu Gamma

20 students standing while holding their Alpha Mu Gamma certificates.The University of Scranton is home to the Theta Iota chapter of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, Alpha Mu Gamma.

New students can join the society by meeting one of the two following qualifications:

  • Full Membership: Two final course grades of "A" or “A-“ in two college level courses (each at least 3 semester units) of the same foreign language or American sign language (ASL)

  • Associate Membership: Granted to any student who has met part of the requirements for Full Membership and has expressed an interest in eventually becoming a Full Member. Upon the completion of all the requirements, they shall be eligible for Full Membership.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

New members are inducted into the society at a yearly induction ceremony and luncheon where they receive their certificates of membership and society pins. Graduating seniors will also receive their gold honor cords. 

For students interested in joining the Foreign Language Honors Society, the deadline to apply is February 1st. The membership fee is $70 and an application is available online or in the main office of the World Languages and Cultures department on the third floor of O'Hara Hall. The next induction ceremony will take place in the spring of 2023.

2025 Alpha Mu Gamma Inductees - Theta Iota Chapter

“Alpha Mu Gamma has as its primary purpose the honoring of students for outstanding achievement during their first year of foreign language study in college. However, students may be admitted at any stage in their college careers.
