EXCELLENCE IN UNIVERSITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

This award is designed to recognize the efforts of faculty who strive for excellence in service to the University, the profession and the community and who demonstrate academic leadership by effective mentoring of junior colleagues.   The recipient of this year’s award is Dr. Darla Germeroth

Dr. Germeroth is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Media and has tirelessly served the University as an educator, administrator, and as both a peer and student mentor since coming to the University in 1989. Darla’s unbridled enthusiasm (along with her infectious laugh) has inspired countless students to select communications as their major, to continue their education through graduate studies, and to pursue careers in the field.

As Department Chair, Darla skillfully guided her department through numerous university and cultural changes to improve the curriculum in the department. As the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Darla was instrumental in improving the Academic Advising Center and fostered communication and cooperation with other support offices across campus. Darla helped lead the revival of the Speech and Debate Team. As Coach, she has assisted our students in qualifying for final rounds and placed in competitions.

In the words of her department members, “Darla has worked selflessly to improve the University, and it is difficult to grasp the extent of her influence on junior faculty. Darla has always gone above and beyond to mentor students and staff and has never shied away from helping others in need. Darla has for decades lived the mission of the University by both leading and serving students and colleagues alike.”
