Arrupe quote

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

As a Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning, The University of Scranton committed to providing a diverse, inclusive, educational, residential and working environment. This environment must be free of harassment and discrimination and must protect the rights and dignity of all members of the University community and guests.

The inconvenient truth of history and systemic racism is that the lives of Black, Indigenous and People of Color have been treated in ways that suggest they have not mattered as much as White lives. Inequity and injustice persist in brazen and subtle ways.

The historically unfair and unjust treatment of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) persists in present culture in brazen and subtle ways.  The University of Scranton community joins in chorus with those who peacefully, but with righteous anger, shout for change -#BlackLivesMatter. A campus community that practices equitable and respectful treatment of all who learn, live and work here is not only our expectation; it is the core of our mission.

The activities and plans shared here and elsewhere on the University’s website are not in themselves enough to transform any institution. We commit ourselves to be and grow as a community where everyone feels welcome and safe.
