January New Student Orientation

OA Group

We are so excited to welcome you to The University of Scranton! As the newest members of our community, our aim to share all the relevant information you’ll need to start strong at the University by participating in our online New Student Orientation program. Please review the information below to assist you in navigating the New Student Orientation experience.

New Student Orientation Online Course

For students transferring from another institution and new students starting at Scranton in January, we have designed a self-paced, online New Student Orientation course on the University’s learning management system, Brightspace (formerly Desire2Learn or D2L). All new students are required to take this course which should take about two hours to complete. You will receive instructions for how to access this course sent to your University of Scranton email account in mid-January.

  • This self-paced course is designed to help you acclimate to University life, offering information about various University resources you will interact with during your time at the University. These online modules should be completed by Tuesday, January 25.
  • To access the course, you will need your Scranton email credentials. If you have not already claimed your account, you can do so by visiting scranton.edu/accepted. You will need your Royal ID Number that was provided to you in your acceptance letter. Once you have claimed your account, you will be able to access your student resources in the my.Scranton portal (https://my.scranton.edu) and setup your account password.
  • If you have any questions accessing this course, please email orientation@scranton.edu.

Academic Advising

As part of your enrollment, you meet (virtually) with an academic advisor within your respective college, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Kania School of Management, or the Panuska College of Professional Studies. Your academic advisor should have already made contact with you. If you need assistance with this, please email orientation@scranton.edu. In this meeting, you review your spring schedule, go over your academic goals, review any placement tests you may need to complete, and resolve any questions you have about academics at the University.

Next Steps

As part of your Orientation, a staff member from Student Life will reach out via telephone to answer any outstanding questions you may have, check in with you on the progress of your Orientation tasks, and go over last-minute details as you prepare to start the semester. You can expect this call about 3-5 days before the start of the spring semester.

  • If you are living on campus this semester, Residence Life will be in contact with you regarding your housing assignment via your Scranton email account. If you have additional questions, please contact Residence Life at (570) 941-6226 or res-life@scranton.edu
  • All new students will require a student ID (known as the Royal Card). The Royal Card is the multi-purpose photo ID card for all students, faculty and staff at the University of Scranton. It acts as a meal card, library card, access card for residence halls, several academic buildings and 24-hour access to the Pro Deo Room in the Library. It can also be used as a debit card at University bookstore, campus vending machines, parking office, laundry facilities and for science supplies.

    • Upon your arrival to campus to either move in to a residence hall or to attend classes, you must visit the Technology Support Center in Alumni Memorial Hall to be issued a Royal Card (#29 on the University's Campus Map opens in new window).

If you have any questions in the meantime, please email orientation@scranton.edu or call us at (570) 941-6233.
