Excellence in Research and Scholarly Practice

This award acknowledges sustained, high-quality scholarly, creative, or applied work that engages students, builds scholarly community, addresses broader societal or ethical questions, and enhances the University’s academic reputation.  The recipient of this award is Dr. Marc Shapiro.

Dr.  Marc B. Shapiro holds the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Chair in Judaic Studies in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, a position he has occupied since 1996. He is the author of nine books with his tenth and eleventh currently in progress and has published more than 35 articles since last receiving this award in 2008.   His most recent book, a study of the unique theological vision of Rav Kook, was named a finalist for the prestigious Rabbi Sacks Book Prize and has been reviewed in outlets ranging from the Times of Israel to Christian Today, drawing attention across scholarly and popular circles alike.  As his nominator writes, thanks to his inexhaustible engagement, the University of Scranton is now known to Jewish communities across the world.
