Excellence in Scholarly Publication

In light of the University’s goal of promoting faculty scholarship, the University is pleased to recognize the special efforts of faculty who strive for, and have attained, distinction in scholarship and creative activity.  The recipient of the faculty enhancement award for Scholarly Publication is Dr. Roy Domenico.

Roy is a Professor in the Department of History, having served two terms as its Chair. Since arriving at the University in 1997, Roy has built an admirable record of scholarly work in Italian history.  One nominator commented that, “Roy truly defines what it means to be a teacher-scholar here at the University of Scranton. It is not a misnomer to claim him as one of the leading figures in post-World War II Italian history in the world.”

Roy’s first book, Italian Fascists on Trial, won the Howard and Helen Marraro Prize for best book in Italian history, which was subsequently translated by Roy and released in Italy in 1996. After this, Dr. Domenico focused his scholarly activity on post-war Italy and Catholic politics and published The Regions of Italy: A Reference Guide to History and Culture in 2002. Since that time, Roy published another work, The Devil and Dolce Vita based on his archival work in Italy and the Vatican. Roy has finished another work on the war in Italy 1940-1945 which will be published by Fordham University Press later in the year.

In addition, Roy has been the recipient of many honors and awards, including a Fulbright Senior Research Award for Italy, President of the Italian Historical Society, and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching from the American Catholic History Association.
