Excellence in Advancing Interdisciplinary Study

This award is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated noteworthy academic leadership in promoting and strengthening cross-disciplinary or interdepartmental teaching and learning endeavors. The award honors a faculty member who has developed creative/innovative interdisciplinary or integrative pedagogies as a means of connecting and enhancing the learning experiences of students. The successful applicant will be a scholar who systematically works across disciplines and departmental boundaries to enable students to confront real world challenges and experience the relatedness of knowledge.

This year the award is a joint award to Professors Marleen Cloutier and Sylvia Orner, Assistant Professors in the Weinberg Memorial Library.

Marleen and Sylvia’s work and their outstanding leadership has been integral in strengthening cross disciplinary learning and research support at The University of Scranton. They have been instrumental in transforming access to scholarly resources for faculty, students, and researchers across all disciplines, directly impacting the University's mission to promote innovative teaching and integrative scholarship.

Together, Professor Cloutier and Professor Orner played a pivotal role in modernizing the University's Library Services Platform (LSP) and Discovery Layer, a transformation that has significantly improved accessibility to information resources for all disciplines across campus. Their leadership in the LSP/Discovery Layer Exploration Committee resulted in the selection and implementation of a system that provides enhanced, intuitive, and integrated access to scholarly materials, ensuring that students and faculty in the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and professional programs have the tools they need for rigorous research and learning.

Since the initial integration, additional research tools have been added to further improve the user search experience, including installing LOCATE a tool specifically used to find print and other physical materials (e.g., DVDs) in the library. This added tool helps to eliminate the vast amounts of information from databases and streaming media resources when users know they are attempting to access a particular book or film.

Their work represents a truly interdisciplinary effort that directly impacts faculty and students in every academic department. Streamlining access to books, journals, databases, and digital collections has enabled faculty to better integrate Library resources into their coursework and research, supporting a more robust cross-disciplinary information environment.

Their efforts have directly supported research initiatives in health sciences, environmental studies, data analysis, and digital humanities. By removing barriers to access, they have empowered students and researchers to engage with multi-disciplinary perspectives.
