University Of Scranton Domestic Service Programs 2022

Each year, The Center for Service & Social Justice coordinates domestic service trips during the Spring Semester. This year, 49 students and 10 faculty and staff chaperons will be traveling to four different cities and serving our most in-need populations. Your support will help offset transportation, housing, and meal costs; making these life changing trips more accessible to our students.

Service in Scranton

Service in Scranton (March 13 - March 19)

This experience offers students the opportunity to be immersed in service and social justice activities in our local NEPA community. It is a great opportunity to learn in-depth the needs of our local community as well as the services provided by various service and justice programs including Friends of the Poor, United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA, St. Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen & Pantry, Weinberg Food Bank, and more. The group will stay at The University of Scranton Chapman Lake Retreat Center throughout the week of service.

Workfest is Christian Appalachian Project's annual alternative spring break program for college students. It attracts more than 400 students from 40 different colleges and universities each year. During Workfest, students serve in teams to repair substandard housing and build new homes for low-income families in Eastern Kentucky. No prior building experience is necessary. Onsite training is provided for all volunteers. In addition to the hands-on work, Workfest provides opportunities to learn about the Appalachian culture, communities, and families being served. Romero Center Ministries, Camden, NJ

Romero Center Ministries (March 13 - March 18)

The Urban Challenge is an urban, service immersion experience rooted in the Catholic faith tradition. Offering a point of access to the lives and stories of the people of Camden, NJ and its surrounding communities in need. We invite participants to enter into the mystery of the preferential option for the poor, and to encounter the poor and experience what they have to offer. Most participants come prepared for what they will do for Camden, but they're typically unprepared for what Camden can do for them.  Check out this link:https://www.romerocenter.org

Fr. McKenna Center, Washington, D.C.

Washington, DC (March 13 - March 19)

Students will participate in service and social justice experiences that focus on issues of homelessness and food insecurity in the Washington DC Metro area. The trip will include volunteering at The McKenna Center, which serves the homeless population by operating a daytime drop-in center for homeless men, one of two such facilities in downtown Washington DC. In addition, the group will serve at one or more large food pantry/soup kitchens, such as DC Central Kitchen, SOME, and/or Martha's Kitchen. Finally, the experience will include a meeting with representatives of the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless. Learn more about the Fr. McKenna Center and DC Central Kitchen at the following links: https://fathermckennacenter.org and https://dccentralkitchen.org
