Council of Alumni Lawyers

Mission Statement

The Council of Alumni Lawyers (CAL) seeks to advance the mission and reputation of The University of Scranton by providing the University and its students with an accessible and engaged network of alumni lawyers. Members of the Council utilize their experience and education, and leverage their professional networks, to actively support faculty, staff and administrators in leading the educational and professional development of Scranton students who plan to enter the field of law. The Council also serves as an example to the broader alumni community, encouraging greater involvement and investment in the University’s strategic priorities and student success.

Thomas P. Cummings '87
CAL Chair

Thomas P. Cummings has been a Partner with Dougherty Leventhal & Price, LLP since 1996 and has been with the firm since 1991. He focuses his practice on workers’ compensation, Social Security Disability and personal injury cases. Tom received his Undergraduate Degree from the University of Scranton (cum laude) and graduated from the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University.

Tom is a certified member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives. He has held various Board positions with the Lackawanna County Bar Association and has lectured at various Bar functions, including the People’s Law School and the Annual Bench/Bar Conference. In addition, he has offered seminar presentations for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the National Business Institute and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Association For Justice. He is a member of the Lackawanna County Bar Association, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Association For Justice, American Association of Justice, Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Association For Justice.

Tom is an active volunteer at his church and in his community. He volunteers weekly at the Saint Francis Kitchen in Scranton where he also serves as a member of the Board of Directors. In 2022, Tom served as Sponsorship Chairperson for the annual “Run Against Hunger” to benefit the Saint Francis Kitchen and its various charitable endeavors. Tom is also an active parishioner, lector and hospitality minister at his home parish, Our Lady of the Snows/Church of Saint Benedict, where he served on Parish Pastoral Council since 2012 and was Council Chairperson from 2018 to 2022. He also chaired the Parish’s Annual Country Bazaar gathering and fundraiser from 2016 to 2019.

Scranton alumni who are working in the field of law or who are currently enrolled in law school are encouraged to join the Council of Alumni Lawyers. Members utilize their experience and education to actively support faculty, staff and administrators in leading the educational and professional development of Scranton students who plan to enter the field of law.
