Commencement Information

The University of Scranton celebrated the Class of 2020 virtually May 29-31; and plan for a Commencement Ceremony and other events on Oct. 24-25.

Degrees were conferred at the virtual ceremonies in May. Academic award presentations, ROTC Commissioning, Nurse Blessing of the Hands and a celebration of a Mass for the Class of 2020 were included among May’s virtual events.

October will include a formal Graduate and Undergraduate Commencement ceremony, the presentation of Honorary Degrees and Commencement Speaker, a Baccalaureate Mass and a “a truly epic Commencement Party on campus."

Class Night

At Class Night, undergraduate members of the Class of 2020 were recognized for academic excellence, leadership and service. Awards were presented by University faculty, staff, administration and alumni.

Nursing Blessing of the Hands Award Ceremony

Undergraduate nursing students were honored by blessing their hands and celebrating their accomplishments as they prepare to enter this helping profession.

Graduate Commencement Celebration

The University celebrated members of the Class of 2020 earning master’s and doctoral degrees at a special ceremony that included messages of congratulations from faculty, staff and students, and remarks by students, special guests, the deans, Provost Jeff Gingerich, Ph.D., and University President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.

Degrees were conferred to graduates as a group at this virtual event, as we plan to present degrees individually at our in-person event in October.

ROTC Commissioning

U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets from The University of Scranton and other area universities were commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Army at this ceremony that was held on Saturday, May 30.

A Mass for the Class of 2020

Our community gathered in prayer, reflection and celebration at The Mass for the Class of 2020, which premiered on May 30.

Rev. Herbert B. Keller, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry, presided, and University President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., offered a special homily. The Mass featured virtual participation from members of the Class of 2020 and was recorded in Madonna della Strada Chapel on campus.

Undergraduate Commencement Celebration

The University community gathered to celebrate the Class of 2020, featuring congratulatory messages from faculty, staff and members of the graduating class; remarks by students; guest speakers including Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti and U.S. Senator Bob Casey; and remarks from the deans, Provost Jeff Gingerich, Ph.D., and University President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.

Degrees were conferred to graduates as a group during this virtual event, and we plan to announce the graduates individually at our in-person event in October.
