Paul Tierney Ph.D., LPC-S

 

Paul Tierney, PhD, LPC-S, was named Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Services. He received his Master’s in School Counseling from the University of Montevallo and his Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Auburn University. Dr. Tierney brings substantial clinical experience in schools, community settings, and hospitals in Alabama, where he was licensed as a professional counselor and certified as a school counselor. Dr. Tierney has a strong focus on at-risk youth, having created behavioral intervention programs for alternative school students in Birmingham, AL, and consulted with various school systems across the state. A licensed foster parent, he has fostered nine children and adopted two. His community involvement earned him a distinguished alumni award and he was the first recipient of the Community Champion award presented by the mayor of his hometown. As a former Clinical Director and adjunct professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Dr. Tierney developed programs addressing homelessness and substance use disorders for both adolescents and adults. Dr. Tierney’s research focuses on enhancing outcomes for at-risk youth and improving counselor advocacy skills.
