Jahmir I. Hertzog '26

Jahmir is a senior political science major at Scranton, with minors in history and criminal justice and a concentration in legal studies. He completed an internship with MOODK Law in Philadelphia to gain practical legal experience. He is president of the Pre-Law Society, which connects students with alumni and opportunities to develop as future legal and civic leaders.

Why Did You Choose Scranton?

When I think of the future, I envision a society that is more just, engaged, ethical, and inclusive. I believe institutions play a crucial role in shaping that future, and Scranton is one of the schools that can lead the charge in that direction.

The university’s emphasis on academic rigor, ethical leadership, and community engagement aligns with my desire to contribute meaningfully to society.

Here, I can combine intellectual growth with hands-on opportunities through service, research, and leadership programs, allowing me to understand the world while actively working to improve it.

What Do You Like About Political Science?

I chose political science because it gives me the tools to understand how our world works and, more importantly, how it could work better. I am fascinated by the way decisions are made, power is exercised, and communities are affected, and I want to be part of shaping a system that is more just and accountable.

What excites me most is that political science challenges me to think critically, ask difficult questions, and explore real solutions, preparing me to not just analyze the world but to engage with it and leave it better than I found it.

How Has Political Science Prepared You for the Real World?

The political science major has helped me understand how government and politics affect people’s lives. It has taught me to think through problems, see different sides of an issue, and make thoughtful decisions. Along with my leadership roles and internship, it has given me experience and confidence to step into real-world situations and try to make a positive difference.
