Letter From Board Chair

Dear Members of the University Community,

I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees of The University of Scranton has unanimously approved the election of Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., to serve as the 29th President of The University of Scranton.

Father Marina brings to Scranton his unique experience as teacher, pastor, scholar and school administrator with more than 20 years of experience in higher education.

Since 2016, Father Marina has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of education at Le Moyne College, where he oversees the Jesuit college’s three academic schools, honors program, library, campus life, student housing, conduct and Title IX compliance, diversity and inclusion programming, global education, student success and support services, disability services, and several other areas. Previously at Le Moyne, he held positions as associate provost, interim chair of the education department and special assistant to the president.

We have created a brief video to introduce you to Father Marina. You can read more about him in the news release. Additional information, including a recording the announcement, can be seen on our 29th President Announcement website.

I want to thank the Presidential Search Committee, chaired by University Trustee Kathleen Sprows Cummings, Ph.D. ‘93, G’93, H'19, and composed of dedicated fellow trustees and representatives of the University’s faculty, staff, alumni and students, who gave generously of their time and talent throughout the process. You have done marvelous work.

I also want to thank the University’s 24th and 27th President, Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J. Although we accepted his decision to step down as President at the close of the 2020-2021 academic year with sadness, we also could not be more grateful of the leadership and love Father Pilarz has given – and continues to give – to our University. I know that Father Marina looks forward to identifying meaningful ways to ensure that Father Pilarz remains engaged in the life of the University community.

In conclusion, please join me in congratulating Father Marina and welcoming him into the Scranton community.

Sincerely,
James M. Slattery ’86
Chair, Board of Trustees
