Let's Get Started!
- Visit The Center for Career Development to develop a personal career plan
- Meet with your academic advisor to explore minors and concentrations
- Create a resume to prepare for any career opportunity
- Register with Handshake to learn about part-time and summer jobs
- Join the Student Nurses’ Association to network among your classmates and other nursing students
- Join professional networks such as American Nurses Association and National League for Nursing
- Build relationships with University professors, advisors, and staff members to add to your existing network
- Refer frequently to the Undergraduate Student Handbook for Nursing and other resources available on the Nursing website
- Engage in at least one co-curricular activity to expand your skills and professionalism.
- Gain experience/exposure – perform community service or volunteer with the population that interests you; or, gain work experience in a healthcare setting.
- Attend at least one program, outside of class, geared towards the nursing profession
- Review informational websites such as discovernursing.com to learn about the options available in nursing.
- Meet with your career counselor to update your career plan
- Prepare your nursing resume that you can update each year
- Fall semester: Look into nurse externships available to you for the summer between Sophomore and Junior year
- If you are unable to secure an externship- consider volunteering at a nursing home, daycare or doctor’s office
- Learn about internships, volunteer, and experiential learning opportunities
- Create a LinkedIn account and connect with alumni
- Upload your resume to Handshake for review and approval
- Conduct informational interviews with nursing professionals
- Participate in career-related workshops and presentations sponsored by the Center for Career Development
- Attend Virtual Career Events and Fairs
- Investigate and join professional associations, such as American Nurses Association and National League for Nursing
- Practice interviewing with a Mock Interview or use Big Interview
- Identify 5 areas of nursing you wish to explore; determine your interest level in those fields.
- Assume a leadership role in a student organization (could be a committee or event chair role; or, an officer role).
- Meet with your career counselor to update your career plan
- Update your professional documents such as resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, and Handshake profile
- Begin searching for and applying for summer externships to be completed during the summer between your junior and senior year
- Determine the role/timing of graduate school in your long-term plans.
- Develop a professional network. Start a professional LinkedIn profile
- Attend Virtual Career Events and Fairs
- Attend an “Applying to Externships” workshop.
- Attend an ‘Applying to Graduate or Professional School” workshop.
- Actively participate and reflect on experiences through clinical rotations.
- Engage in at least one out-of-class practical experience (externship or volunteer).
- Attend the Nursing Career Fair. Submit applications for externships and conduct
- Participate in career-related workshops and presentations sponsored by the Center for Career Development
- Practice interviewing with a mock interview or use Big Interview
- Meet with your career counselor to update your career plan
- Obtain additional practical experiences
- Continue to expand your professional network
- Finalize your resume and have it critiqued by career counselor/advisor and faculty.
- Attend Virtual Career Events and Fairs
- Practice interviewing with a mock interview or use Big Interview
- Attend campus based Nursing Professional Development Conference
- If you are seeking employment:
- Conduct an effective job search to secure a satisfying job placement
- Secure 3-5 persons to serve as references. References may be online or letters as directed (at least one faculty and at least one person from a clinical).
- For employment after graduation, begin applying for positions in the Spring.
- Secure interview attire that adheres to professional dress standards for interviews.
- If you are graduating and pursuing a Master's degree:
- Conduct an effective application process for admission to a graduate school program of your choosing.
- Take appropriate graduate admissions test (scores are typically admissible for 3-5 years).
- For fall admission to a graduate program, submit applications by January.
- Report your post-graduation plans to The Center for Career Development
