International Honor Society of Nursing

Sigma Theta Tau International is an honor society of nursing committed to fostering excellence, scholarship and leadership in nursing to improve health care worldwide. The Society promotes the use of nursing research in health care delivery and makes its resources available to all people and institutions interested in the latest knowledge in nursing care.

Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922 and has a membership of more than 280,000 members active in more than 90 countries. It has chapters located at 503 college and university schools of nursing worldwide.

  • 21% are educators
  • 60% of its members hold master's and/or doctoral degrees

You can become a member by accepting an invitation to membership from a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Membership Criteria

Undergraduate students must:

  • have completed half of the nursing curriculum
  • achieve academic excellence; 3.0 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale)
  • rank in the upper 35th percentile of the graduating class
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity
  • obtain two endorsements

Registered Nurse students must:

  • have completed 12 credit hours at their current school
  • have completed half of the nursing curriculum
  • achieve academic excellence; 3.0 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale)
  • rank in the upper 35th percentile of the graduating class
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity
  • obtain two endorsements

Graduate Students must:

  • have completed 1/4 of the nursing curriculum
  • achieve academic excellence; 3.5 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale)

Doctoral degree students must:

  • have completed 1/4 of the nursing curriculum
  • achieve academic excellence; 3.75 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale)

Community leaders /nurse professionals must:

  • be a registered nurse
  • hold at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing or other field
  • have held a professional nursing license for at least five years
  • have demonstrated marked achievement in nursing education, practice, research, administration or publication

Membership renewal is a vital component of the continued success of any organization. The Iota Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau needs each and every individual inducted into our honor society!  Your membership renewal makes an important contribution to our chapter.

So, even if your busy lives do not permit you to work on committees, or distance separates you from the work of the organization, please consider supporting Iota Omega through membership renewal.

A membership renewal form will be mailed to you approximately two months prior to your membership expiration date. You may also renew your membership online via the MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL form, using Visa, Discover or MasterCard.
