Awareness, Training & Prevention

The University of Scranton strives to prevent incidents of hazing among students because of the recognition of the harm that comes to individuals and the community when such behavior occurs.

Accordingly, in addition to policy and enforcement efforts, it is necessary to raise awareness of hazing and the Hazing Prohibition Policy, to educate the community via programming and training, and to support skill development among student leaders, especially those who are responsible for team-building.

Some of the University's efforts include:

  • Policy Education: Key groups of students (i.e., NCAA student athletes, Club Sport athletes, Resident Assistants) learn why hazing is not tolerated among groups and teams, review the University's Hazing Prohibition Policy and the Student Code of Conduct, discuss the process for reporting possible hazing behavior, and understand possible University and criminal consequences of hazing.
  • "Recognizing and Preventing Hazing" Online Training Module: Offered to students in partnership with United Educators, this 20-minute online module helps students to recognize and respond to hazing, understand why justifications for hazing are not valid, and how to find the University's Hazing Prohibition Policy.
  • National Hazing Awareness Week: Coming in late September 2025, this will be an opportunity to educate the University community at large about hazing awareness and prevention.
