Fieldwork Model

Low vision rehabilitation is an emerging practice area in occupational therapy. A model best-practice specialty Level II fieldwork program in low vision rehabilitation was developed for a partnering site. Best-practice for this program was defined as a triangulation of best available research, consensus of a panel of experts in low vision and fieldwork education, and feedback from the therapists at the partnering hospital site. Site-specific objectives, a developmental timeline, and a competency checklist were developed as a part of a manual for fieldwork educators and occupational therapy students to promote successful completion of the fieldwork placement. Implementation of this model will benefit the fieldwork sites and individuals with visual impairment who receive rehabilitation services. This model will be of benefit for the field of occupational therapy in helping to train and meet future workforce demands.
