A Special Year-End Message
Dear Friends,
The holidays have a marvelous way of putting everything into perspective. As the temperature drops and snow begins to blanket the Commons, Christmas music fills the air and signals the perfect time to start shopping for holiday gifts. For all of us though, the true joy of the season lies in the opportunity to reflect upon the countless blessings in our lives and, in that spirit of gratitude, celebrate the birth of Christ again. I am especially grateful for the people God has placed in my life over many years now, with the Scranton community holding a very special place in my heart.
This year, I am feeling particularly blessed with a new companion, our newest Royal, Gracie the campus mascot! She arrived in Scranton on August 21 (the 20th anniversary of my entrance into the Society of Jesus). And over the past few months, she has not only brought immense joy to our students and the rest of the campus community, but has also reminded me of the importance of cherishing the simple moments in life with those closest to our hearts.
In a similar way to how Gracie has become a special part of my life, I know that Scranton holds a special place in yours. I want you to know how deeply grateful I am for you. You are an essential part of our remarkable community, and the experiences you had at Scranton will continue to echo across the life of our University for generations to come.
I invite you to take a moment to reflect upon the ways that Scranton has shaped your journey, and to consider giving back in a way that honors that connection. If you’re able to do so, please join the chorus of alumni, parents, and friends making year-end contributions for the advancement of our mission. Your donation, no matter the amount, is more than just a gift; it’s an investment in the future of Scranton and in the lives of the students who will continue the legacy we’ve all helped to build. Together, we can ensure that they too have access to the Jesuit education, experiences, and opportunities that have made such a profound difference in so many lives.
Christmas will be here before we know it. And, as always, it will challenge us to consider and internalize what the love of God, made visible and evident in the life of Jesus Christ, means for all of us as his disciples. I hope to see you over the holidays, whether on campus or at one of our regional events. May God bless you and your family during this Christmas season, and may this time be filled with joy and peace for you and all those you love.
Yours faithfully,
Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., University President
