Doug has over 30 years of professional experience in the areas of leadership, business turnarounds, corporate governance, nonprofits, accounting, finance, operations, and consulting. He has served in executive roles in start-up, middle market, Fortune 500 companies, and nonprofit organizations where he has held the titles of Chief Executive Officer, President, Chief Operations Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. In addition, he has served as a senior auditor for KPMG Peat Marwick. 

He has served on the Board of Directors for both public and private companies. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Allied Services Integrated Healthcare System. In addition to his role as Director, he serves as Chairman of the Foundation Board and Skilled Nursing Division and on the Finance Committee. Doug has served on the Board of Directors for GeneLink Biosciences, Incorporated, Chiliad, Incorporated and the Susan G. Komen of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  

Doug transitioned from practice into a full-time academia academic career in 2008. He currently serves as the Chair of the Accounting Department, Director of the Doctorate in Business Administration Program, Director of the Nonprofit Leadership Program, and an Associate Professor at the University of Scranton. He has served as the Faculty Senate President and Director of the Master in Accountancy Program. He has taught courses in leadership, finance, auditing, accounting, strategy, consulting, and healthcare.  

Doug is an accomplished teacher. He was awarded the 2015-2018 Alperin Teaching Fellow at the Kania School of Management at the University of Scranton. He received the Kania School of Management Award for Curriculum Innovation for 2018. He was awarded the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants Outstanding Educator of the Year award for 2015 and the Kania School of Management Teacher of The Year at the University of Scranton for 2011 – 2012 and 2009 – 2010. He also received the University of Scranton’s Provost Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award for 2014. In addition, he was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for Teaching from the Cultural Mission of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. 

Doug is a national award winning researcher. He received several national recognitions including: a Gold Lybrand Medal in 2016 from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), a Silver Lybrand Medal in 2015 from the IMA, a Bronze Lybrand Medal in 2014 from the IMA, several Certificates of Merit from the IMA for 2012 and 2015, and The Michael J. Barrett Doctoral Dissertation Award from The Institute of Internal Auditors in 2011. He received the Outstanding DBA Research Award from Kennesaw State University in 2011 and was awarded the University of Scranton’s Provost Excellence in Scholarly Publication Award in 2012.  In addition, he has received grants from PriceWaterhouseCoopers, The Institute of Management Accountants, and the Institute of Internal Auditors. Over the past five years, he has had over 40 articles published in such outlets as: The Journal of Accounting and Public Policy (JAPP), Accounting Horizons, Current Issues in Auditing, The Journal of Accountancy, Strategic Finance, Management Accounting Quarterly, The CPA Journal, The PICPA Journal, Internal Auditing, The Journal of Applied Business Research, and The Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences. 

Doug also serves as a Partner in Empirical Compass Consulting, a firm that provides professional development and training for CPAs, Financial Executives, and Boards in the areas of Corporate Governance, Ethics, and Fraud Investigation.  

Doug holds a DBA (Doctorate in Business Administration) from Kennesaw State University with a concentration in Accounting, an MBA from Columbia University, and a BS in Accounting from the University of Scranton.  

Doug is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant and Six Sigma Black Belt trained in operations. He has completed ongoing Executive Programs at Harvard Business School, Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania, The Center for Creative Leadership and the Chopra Center in operations, human resources, strategy, leadership, and wellness, respectively. Doug has completed the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Bridge Program where he obtained the designation of a professionally qualified faculty member in finance, accounting and management.

Doug was admitted into the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) in 2004. He is a member of the Woodstock Business Conference, the Institute of Management Accountants, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
