MARGARETE L. ZALON, PHD, RN, ACNS-BC, FAAN
Professor of Nursing; Director, Online MS in Health Informatics Program
Dr. Zalon's area of expertise is in adult/gerontological nursing. She is also the director of the online master of science in health informatics program at the University. Dr. Zalon worked in several major medical centers in New York City before moving to Pennsylvania. She teaches adult health nursing in the undergraduate and graduate program, professional issues for registered nurses returning to school, and nursing research for graduate and doctoral students. Dr. Zalon's research has focused pain management, and vulnerable elders. She has received funding from the American Nurses Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. More recently, her research is focuses on the prevention of cognitive decline in the hospitalized elderly.
Dr. Zalon is committed to advancing the nursing profession and helping nurses to be better advocates for their patients at the bedside and the boardroom. As a faculty member, she works to help improve the environment for nursing practice for students and future nurses. Dr. Zalon recently co-edited a book, Nurses Making Policy from Bedside to Boardroom. She has served on the board of the American Nurses Association (ANA), as vice-president of the American Nurses Credentialing Center and as the chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the American Nurses Foundation (ANA's charitable arm). Dr. Zalon is a past president of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association. Currently, she serves on the American Academy of Nursing's Acute and Critical Care Expert Panel, and as a trustee of the Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania. Locally, Dr. Zalon chairs the Susan G. Komen Northeastern Pennsylvania Affiliate Grants Committee, which evaluates grant applications for breast screening and breast cancer survivor support services.
