Save the Date: The University of Scranton Day of Service April 1, 2017

The Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement will celebrate our annual Day of Service on Saturday, April 1, 2017. On this day, the helping hands of the University community will stretch from the city of Scranton and beyond as alumni, parents and students will gather in shared service that demonstrats the life-changing and enduring power of a Jesuit education.

Below is a list of the 2017 sites. Register today!

  • Allentown Rescue Mission in Allentown, PA
    • Donate food for breakfast, cook, serve and clean up for homeless men at the mission, a homeless shelter in downtown Allentown. 

      The Allentown Rescue Mission has been serving the needs of the homeless and needy in the Lehigh Valley for more than 100 years. The Mission provides rescue, rehabilitation and restoration for homeless men in crisis.

      Time of service project: 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. p.m.

      Location: 355 Hamilton Street, Allentown, PA

      Immediately following the project (at noon)Rev. Mark Searles '08 will celebrate Mass for volunteers and others from the alumni community who want to join at  Immaculate Conception Church, 501 Ridge Avenue, Allentown.

      Miscellaneous information: Volunteers will help with the purchase of food for meals for about 55-60 men and complete a little food prep prior to the event, i.e., peeling and cubing of potatoes. On the day of the event, our group will arrive at 8:00 a.m., cook meals, serve two shifts: one at 10:00 a.m. and another at 10:30 a.m.; do some minor clean up and finish around noon. All volunteers will need to fill out a volunteer form and bring to the event.

  • City Harvest: Bed-Stuy Mobile Market
    • Saturday, April 1, 2017
      Time: 8:45 a.m.-Noon
      736 Park Ave
      Brooklyn, NY

      Join University of Scranton alumni, parents, students and friends as we volunteer with City Harvest at Bed-Stuy Mobile Market. Volunteers will be stationed at 3-4 market tables, each supplied with thousands of pounds of fresh produce that they will help distribute to eligible market-goers. As the market-goers stop by each table, volunteers greet them and then weigh and bag the produce. All food is distributed free of charge.

      Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age to participate. The Mobile Markets take place outdoors, rain or shine. We stress that it is important to wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothes. As this is a hands-on activity and there is no secure place to leave your property, it is recommended that you travel light.

      Volunteers will be bagging food and preparing for distribution. Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes and dress in layers, as the warehouse is often chilly.

      Location: The Community Food Bank of New Jersey, 31 Evans Terminal, Hillside, New Jersey

      Join University of Scranton alumni, parents, students and friends as we volunteer at The Community Food Bank of New Jersey.

      Volunteers are asked to bring a $1 donation for the food bank.

      Miscellaneous information: Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks including: sort and re-pack food items; stock the shelves with food; help in the Kathleen's Closet thrift shop; help assemble fundraising mailings; sort and package new clothes for children in the Kids Division; stock the shelves with school supplies in the Tools 4 Schools Resource Center.
