Information Update - Spring 1994

From The Library Director

With increasing numbers of students, faculty and staff using the Internet, we have included in this issue a list of titles available in the Weinberg Library.

During Intersession the Library introduced the Data Research Journal Citation Module on the Online Public Catalog. This module cross references the Library's local holdings to periodical index databases, such as Periodical Abstracts and ABI/Inform. When the user locates a citation to a journal article, the system immediately reports whether the Weinberg Library subscribes to that journal. The Library's holdings are automatically updated as each new journal issue is checked in.

Barely five months after our conversion from the Geac integrated library system to the Data Research Associates system, we upgraded to Version 2.3 at the end of February. Many of the changes are for "behind the scenes" work by the Circulation and Cataloging departments, but several will make use of the online catalog even more convenient. Reserve book searching by course and instructor will now be available in Information Gateway. An Expert Searching Option has been added to the Information Gateway menu. Users may now use the common command language to search. Keyword searching of other databases such as ABI/Inform and Periodical Abstracts will now be available from the information Gateway.

An exciting development in 1994 will be the creation of a Friends of the Library Group. Friends understand that a great library is the heart of a great University. Our Friends will work to advance the interest of the University of Scranton Library System by supporting University efforts to increase the Library's collections, by encouraging gifts and bequests to the Library, and by creating interest in the Library, its work, its needs, and its importance to the future development of the University and the community. The Friends' Advisory Council will hold its inaugural meeting in April. Watch for further developments.
