Search for the 26th President

The Next President of The University of Scranton

Father Scott Pilarz

I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees of The University of Scranton has appointed Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., as the next President of The University of Scranton. Father Pilarz, who served as Scranton’s 24th president, was selected following a national search that began in September.

Father Pilarz’s love for The University of Scranton and his steadfast commitment to Catholic and Jesuit education are well known. He is highly regarded as an outstanding teacher, scholar and visionary leader who is beloved by students.

During Father Pilarz’s tenure as president, Scranton earned national recognition for academic quality, community engagement and student success, achieving then record admissions and undertaking the largest fundraising and construction projects in its history.  The University began and completed the Pride, Passion, Promise Campaign, which surpassed its $125 million fundraising goal. More than 100 new faculty members were hired and, through campaign support, five endowed chairs were established. In addition, a number of transformational improvements were made on campus, including the DeNaples Center, the Dionne Campus Green, Condron Hall, Montrone Hall and what would eventually be named Pilarz Hall; as well as the Loyola Science Center.

Father Pilarz currently serves as president of Georgetown Preparatory School in Washington, D.C., the nation’s oldest Jesuit educational institution. He remains deeply committed to Georgetown Prep and to ensuring a smooth transition of leadership. His starting date at Scranton is yet to be determined, as he works through this process.

The search was undertaken by a broadly representative Search Committee. On behalf of the entire University community, I want to thank Philip Judge, S.J., who chaired the search committee, as well as my fellow trustees and other representatives of the University community who gave generously of their time to serve on this committee.

Please join me in congratulating Father Pilarz and welcoming him back to Scranton.
