Disaster Relief Steering Committtee

On September 6, 2017, President Keller addressed the whole of our community about his desire to establish a Disaster Relief Steering Committee (DRSC).  We, the chairs of that group are pleased to announce that this committee has been formed and has already begun its work on your behalf. In the weeks to come, our community will engage in a number of fundraising efforts collection efforts to help alleviate the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria as well as those affected by the earthquake in Mexico City.

What We've Learned

In the course of the last few weeks our committee has begun to identify, with the help of local charity organizations in all the affected areas, how best to address the growing needs of those most affected by the recent natural disasters. We have also been in contact with all of the Jesuit schools and parishes in those areas and have continued to monitor their situations while seeking appropriate opportunities to engage with them when their needs are made explicit.

Relief efforts are well underway in Southern Texas and Florida, yet much of Puerto Rico is still in dire need of basic necessities like clean water, food, and power.  We will begin distributing funds already collected to those agencies who have expressed the gravest need and will discern how future funds will be distributed when they are collected.

What we are hearing from all of the agencies working in affected areas is that they have been inundated with many items that are not helpful to the families most in need.

How You Can Help

CASH FOR GIFT CARDS: What each agency has told us is most helpful for the families in-need is gift cards that will enable them to purchase the basic necessities for living, yet also allow them to purchase other necessities like clothing, home supplies, and books and school supplies for their children.

To that end, we have already set up a Royal Response account which will hold all moneys raised for our relief efforts so that they can be easily distributed when the time comes.

For those on campus affected by this tragedy, we have many resources available.

  •     Students who may need housing accommodations during upcoming breaks - due to impacts of these disasters – should contact Lauren Rivera, Dean of Students (570)941-7680

Please continue to pray for those who experienced these natural disasters, as well as those who have friends and family in the impacted regions. We here at The University of Scranton will continue to monitor the recovery efforts and pray for all of those affected by these natural disasters.
