Call for Nominations for 2018 Commencement Speakers & Honorary Degree Recipients

May. 15, 2017

In just a few short weeks, the University community will gather for Undergraduate and Graduate commencement ceremonies that will include an outstanding slate of speakers and honorary degree recipients. With our work concluded for this year, the Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Committee is now beginning work for 2018 starting with a broad call for nominations. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents are invited to nominate candidates for 2018 honorary degrees and commencement speaker. We are seeking individuals who meet the following characteristics: • Achievements and actions that are consonant with the Mission of The University of Scranton. • Distinguished by their professional, scholarly, intellectual or creative achievement in such fields as religion, scholarship, science, medicine, the law, the arts, business and public service. • Promote the ideals of faith and justice in the spirit of the Gospels through service or philanthropy that manifests a commitment to the common good. I encourage you to review the Nomination Process and Selection Criteria developed by the Committee and then submit recommendations through the online nomination form: 2018 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient Nomination Form I also want to emphasize the following from the nomination materials: Confidentiality is essential to the nomination process. The nominee should not be informed of his or her nomination because not all excellent candidates can be recognized, and knowledge of a failed nomination can be embarrassing and hurtful. Currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff are not eligible to be nominated for speakers or honorary degrees. Nominations for Commencement 2018 will be accepted until June 30, 2017. Please feel free to contact nominations@scranton.edu if you have any questions about the process.
