Alumni News: March 5, 2013

The following items highlight the many alumni events and initiatives at The University of Scranton.

Scranton Alumni Day of Service Right Around the Corner

This April, Royals everywhere will roll up their sleeves and show what “men and women for others” really means.

Large groups. Small groups. Families. Individuals. From campus to California, alumni will be sweeping streets, serving meals, painting fences and sharing the Scranton spirit as part of the second Scranton Day of Service.

Last year more than 400 alumni, students and friends participated in the Alumni Scranton Day of Service.  While many of the projects are scheduled for April 13, there will be some on other days in April as well.

'Beyond the Commons' Provides Seniors Perspective

The Alumni Relations Office hosts a series of dinners known as "Beyond the Commons." Beyond the Commons is a series of small, intimate dinners that give alumni an opportunity to dine with current seniors in a casual atmosphere. Last Fall, Brain Goldsack ’09 and Tina Cognetti ’12 shared their experiences being a senior, gave advice on what to do and what not to do as a senior, as well as what to look forward to as Scranton alumnus/alumna. Another dinner was focused on doing a year of service after graduation. This dinner provided a unique opportunity for seniors to gain perspective from a former JVC member and current University campus minster Kelly Miguens ’10 and four JVC members who are currently serving in the city of Scranton. Rita DiLeo ’11 and Shawn Lamb ’11 recently shared how they were active on campus during their time at Scranton and how they made the transition from student involvement to a career within Student Affairs and the Higher Education world. Pet Therapy Seeks Pooches for April 23 Event

The University of Scranton’s Center for Service and Social Justice is looking for Scranton alumni to participate in Pet Therapy: Canines on Campus on Tuesday, April 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (The event's rain date is Thursday, April 25). Dogs do not have to be registered pet therapy dogs, but do need to be fully vaccinated, well behaved, and like people and other dogs. They must enjoy crowds as this event gathers hundreds of visitors.

If you are a University of Scranton employee or an alumni in the area and have a pet to bring to campus, email ellen.judge@scranton.edu with your dog's name and breed no later than Friday, April 19.
