Screening and Behind-the-Scenes Look at Academy Award-Winning Film Set for March 6 at Scranton
The University of Scranton and Marywood University will co-present the showing of “Life of Pi” by director Ang Lee and a book-signing, film introduction and question and answer session with the film’s associate producer Jean-Christophe Castelli, author of “The Making of Life of Pi: A Film, A Journey,” on Friday, March 6, beginning a 6:30 p.m. at the Moskovitz Theater of the DeNaples Center on Scranton’s campus.
Scranton area residents can view the Academy Award-winning film “Life of Pi” and get a first-hand account of its creation from the film’s associate producer Jean-Christophe Castelli, author of “The Making of Life of Pi: A Film, A Journey.” The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, begins Friday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. with a book signing by Castelli. It will be followed at 7 p.m. by a screening of the “Life of Pi” that will include a brief before-film talk and after-film question and answer session with Castelli. The event will be held on the fourth floor of the DeNaples Center on the University’s campus. Books are available for purchase at the event.
The film, based on the prize-winning best-selling novel by Yann Martel, won numerous awards including an Academy Award for Taiwanese-American director Ang Lee.
The illustrated book, “The Making of Life of Pi: A Film, A Journey,” provides a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the film and the unique approach to filmmaking of one of today’s most influential directors. It includes a foreword by Martel and an introduction by Lee.
Castelli, the book’s author, worked as a magazine editor and freelance writer, publishing articles in Vanity Fair, Esquire and Filmmaker, before moving into film. In addition to being associate producer for “Life of Pi,” Castelli has worked with Lee on cultural research for “The Ice Storm” (1997), and with story development for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000). He is currently writing the screenplay for Lee’s next film.
The screening is the final event of a three-part Ang Lee Film Series, which is co-presented by The University of Scranton’s Asian Studies Program and the Taiwan Ministry of Culture – Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York, in collaboration with Marywood University. The program is supported by special patron Samuel Yin, Ph.D., a Spotlight Taiwan Grant and a University of Scranton – Marywood University Collaborative Grant.
