After finishing a shortened fall sports season at the end of March, the University's spring athletics teams raced into action, playing a Landmark Conference only slate of games that concluded in early May.

But, unlike their winter and fall counterparts, Royals spring student-athletes were able to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Championships in their respective sports, as they made their return to competition in late April.

Here is a rundown of how Scranton’s spring teams have been doing to end the 2020-21 academic year.

Men’s & Women’s Golf

The Scranton golf teams put together strong performances throughout their 2021 spring slate.

The women’s golf team concluded a spring campaign in which they captured three dual events and an invitational title to take a fourth-place finish at the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship on Apr. 17. Junior Emma Nemitz was Scranton’s high finisher in the event, placing 10th.

Scranton’s men’s team was just as strong, as they went a perfect 8-0 in dual matches and captured four invitational titles throughout April. The Royals’ season culminated with the 2021 Landmark Championship on Apr. 24, where they finished second overall. Sophomore Ethan Zawatski was named the Landmark’s Rookie of the Year, as well.

The tennis teams also had a strong spring on the courts, as each finished in the top three of the Landmark Conference standings entering tournament play, which began on May 1.

The men’s team finished with a 6-2 ledger, capturing their last four matches of the regular season. The women’s squad, meanwhile, finished 6-1 (assuming a win today against Drew, will let you know if they lose). Both teams will host Landmark Conference playoffs matches at home over the next week in search of a Landmark title and a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship.

Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse

The lacrosse teams once again rose to the top of the Landmark Conference standings in 2021, with each finishing near the top of the conference once again.

On the women’s side, the Royals finished the regular season 7-1, beating five opponents by double-digit goals. The second seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs, the Royals will look to capture their first-ever Landmark title as the season comes to a close on May 1.

For the men’s team, the Royals put together a 4-2 season in Landmark play and will enter the conference playoffs as the number three seed. When the playoffs begin, Scranton will be in search of their first conference title since 2011.

The baseball team enters the first weekend of May in first place in the competitive Landmark Conference, registering an 11-7 mark at the time of publication. One of the top performers for the Royals on the season has been sophomore pitcher Daniel Johnson, who has now allowed a run in three starts on the mound while earning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week accolades twice.

The softball team has been just as strong in their spring season, sporting a 16-4 record entering the final weekend of the regular season. Currently, the Royals are in second place in the Landmark Conference standings and are in line to host a slew of Landmark semifinal round games on May 8-9 at Magis Field. The Royals have captured half of their games by run-rule so far (8), as well.

The track & field teams kicked off their respective seasons on Apr. 3 and have already competed in four events throughout the month of April. After one more tune-up at Elizabethtown on May 1, Scranton will head to Susquehanna for the 2021 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship on May 8 to complete their 2021 season.
