A Message from the President

A Message from the President

Dear Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni, Parents & Friends:

We are taught to put compassion into action. This year we learned something that perhaps health care professionals knew all along: Masks cannot conceal our compassion.

In this issue of The Scranton Journal, we learn about a subset of our health care community — our RoyalRNs, some of whom have spent the majority of this year helping the nation and the world respond to the pandemic. For our newly graduated class entering the real world, they set a positive example of compassion. We also pay tribute to the resilient Class of 2020, which has taken this moment in stride.

I have had to make tough decisions over the years, but none were as challenging as this year has been, including having to announce my departure in May 2021. Please know that I will continue to plan for the University’s future, in part by beginning to put our new strategic plan into place. You will be learning more about the plan in the weeks and months ahead.

My prayers go out to all of you during this trying time, as you continue to make difficult decisions of your own. Thank you for your deep commitment and love for this University and your fellow Royals. May you all stay safe and well.

God bless you, and God bless The University of Scranton.

Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
