The Humanities, Math and the Sciences
Taking inspiration from Francis Su’s book Mathematics for Human Flourishing, the Slattery Center’s Math and Science initiative is built on the conviction that true excellence in math, the sciences, and engineering requires a deeply humanistic background and mindset.
As one of the original liberal arts, Math perhaps best fulfills Dante’s description of the liberal arts bringing the theoretical and practical together. The Sciences more than ever hold the potential to redeem the human condition.
Guest speakers and lecturers in Math and the Sciences will form a key part of the Slattery Center’s programming. A special student fellowship will be announced in 2021 for work that combines the humanities and these other fields. Podcasts with CAS faculty from beyond the traditional humanities will enrich this inter-curricular dialogue. And an annual faculty lecture on the dance between the humanities and other fields will be announced in Fall 2021.
