Professor Valunas received the Student Nurses's Association Honorable Mention Award for her project that focused on teen mothers.  She is a member of the Iota Omega Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society.  Professor Valunas worked at Duke University Medical Center in both the school-aged child and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.  She was a founding team member of the Transitional Care Unit. She remains certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the Pediatric Nurse Certification Board.

Professor Valunas has practiced as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for the past 19 years in both North Carolina and Pennsylvania.  She has taught medical students at the Geisinger Commonwealth Medical School.  Professor Valunas teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs. She lives in Dunmore with her husband and two children.
