Special Education, MS
The Department of Education is committed to preparing informed, inquiring, and skilled professionals who, as scholars and decision-makers, are ready to take their place as leaders improving the educational community.
Students can enter the Special Education program in a course of study leading to PreK- 8 certification or in a course of study leading to 7- 12 certification.
Program Specific Admission Requirements
A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.00 is expected for admittance to graduate study. An applicant whose undergraduate GPA falls below the level of 3.00 must submit other evidence of his/her ability to successfully complete a graduate program, such as grades in other post-baccalaureate courses/programs, scores from examinations (e.g. Graduate Record Examination), or a record of successful completion of progressively higher work responsibilities.
Additionally, students applying to the Special Education program must provide a copy of a valid U.S. teaching certificate for admission.

The program offers two certification pathways: students can enroll in a course of study leading to Pre K- 8 certification or in a course of study leading to grades 7- 12 certification. Both pathways require 36 credit hours of coursework and include an internship.
All students pursuing a master’s degree must complete research and foundation course requirements and pass a capstone experience/ comprehensive examination. Prior to student teaching, students must pass the requisite PECT test(s), which are mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
