Dr. Robert W. Shaffern

Professor of History
Dr. Shaffern joined the University of Scranton faculty in 1995. He earned his B.A. from DePaul University and both his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. In addition to teaching Medieval History, he teaches courses in ancient and Byzantine civilization, the Italian Renaissance and the Reformation. Dr. Shaffern’s scholarship has been mostly devoted to the intellectual and religious history of the Middle Ages, in particular, scholastic thought, penance, canon law, and the administration of pastoral care.
