1387519200000April 10, 2015Dear Members of the Faculty and Staff,

Members of the faculty and staff have asked for additional information following my messages of February 10 and 17 about the University’s intention to remove coverage for direct abortion from health care plans.

Responding to thoughtful feedback, I have decided to schedule an information session for Friday, April 24, 2015, at 3 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center. At this session, I will explain my conclusions about why this change in our health care plans is necessary for the University to remain faithful to its mission and identity as a Catholic institution. We are also planning to invite an outside expert who can help to answer questions about the Church’s position on abortion, including abortion in tragic and challenging circumstances.

Faculty and staff have also understandably asked about the specific procedures that would no longer be covered under the University’s health plans following the implementation of this change. As I noted in my earlier messages, the University is first addressing changes through negotiations with the faculty because abortion coverage is stipulated in the faculty contract. The University has already shared more detailed information with union leadership as part of our ongoing negotiations. This more detailed information is available for faculty and staff to review through the following link: Health Care Coverage Changes Related to Direct Abortion.

Except for 14 codes related to direct abortion services, the University’s health plans would continue to cover treatment in cases of pregnancy as a result of rape or incest or where the pregnancy threatens the woman’s life.

In addition, the University’s health care plans would cover emergency contraception for rape victims.

I am grateful to faculty and staff for sharing your thoughts and concerns with me. As I have said, questions around abortion have been divisive elsewhere, and I continue to hope that the strength of our University community and our deep, shared commitment to our Catholic and Jesuit mission and identity will enable us to move forward with respect and understanding.

May God continue to bless The University of Scranton.

Sincerely,
Kevin P. Quinn, S.J.
