April 16, 2012 Dear Colleagues:
Since 2006, The University of Scranton has hosted a series of inspiring seminars to introduce interested faculty and staff to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. In harmony with our University mission to be “animated by the spiritual vision and the tradition of excellence characteristic of the Society of Jesus and those who share its way of proceeding,” I ask you to consider applying to participate in the next Catholic Intellectual Tradition seminar, which will take place June 4-8, 2012.
This summer’s seminar will include discussions from Pope Benedict XVI’s Spe Salvi; St. Augustine’s Confessions: Story of a Soul, The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux by John Clarke, O.C.D.; Tidings Brought to Mary by Paul Claudel; New York Times bestseller The Language of God by Francis S. Collins; as well as selected reading from St. Ignatius, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas More, and others. Professor Josephine Dunn will present the art of Christian antiquity, with works from the church of St. Francis in Assisi, the Sistine Chapel, and Scranton's own St. Peter's Cathedral. Moderators include Dr. Josephine Dunn, Dr. Robert Shaffern, Dr. Brian Benestad, Tim Cadigan, S.J., Dr. Michael Sulzinski, Dr. Nathan Lefler, Dr. Brian Conniff, Dr. John Deak, Dr. Cyrus Olsen and Annie Hounsokou.
Participants will meet 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. daily. Lunch will be provided and participants will be sent copies of the reading materials in advance. Each participant may be responsible to lead a portion of the discussions of the books.
Please consider applying to attend the seminar. If you would like to attend and, upon approval by your supervisor, please submit a brief paragraph explaining why you would be interested in participating to Tara Seely at tara.seely@scranton.edu prior to May 4. While the seminar will be limited to a dozen participants, preference will be given to those who have not already attended prior sessions.
Thank you for considering this invitation.
Sincerely,
Kevin P. Quinn, S.J.
President
