Why did you choose a career in student affairs? I was a work study in the Residence Life Office when I was a freshman. Their influence on my life was incredibly positive and helped shape my college experience for 4 years. I later became a Resident Assistant and loved working with students. Pursuing a master's degree in the field helped confirm that this was the career for me. Working on a college campus gives us all a great deal of opportunities that you would never have when working for a company.
What do you enjoy most about working in student affairs? Building community, creating programming, helping students and families during crisis and most of all working with student leaders and young professionals is what makes the job worth while. I feel like we make a difference everyday to someone on this campus!
What advice would you give to a student considering a career in student affairs? Be sure to go to graduate school (if not now then very soon!). There are so many opportunities out there to work for your education and you should take advantage of it. Try to gain multiple experiences from different institutions before settling down to one career path. Never be afraid to ask for advice and/or guidance from those who have worked in student affairs. We all love to talk about our career journey!
