February 2024

The Cultural Centers wants to celebrate and promote our upcoming cross departmental and community programming offerings for this year Black History Month theme: “African American and the Arts”.

This year’s theme is aiming to highlight African Americans’ contributions to the world of art in various forms and definitions and through various artistic and cultural movements. We hope you can join us!

Black History Month Film Series:

  • Cooley High, Wednesday, February 28th

Freedom Fest:  Saturday, February 17th from 8pm-10pm, DeNaples Center, Ballroom 407. 

The Louis Stanley Brown Black Student Union invites you to its 2nd Annual Freedom Fest that will take place on Saturday, February 17th, 8pm, in the DeNaples Center, Ballroom 407. The event is to serve as an open compass to educate the student body and Scranton community about Black History and Black Culture. It will also promote community connections with local black owned businesses.Sponsored by the Louis Stanley Brown Black Student Union

Black Women in Music: Tuesday, February 20th, 7pm, Brennan Hall, Rose Room 509. 

The Cultural Centers will host a presentation and conversation with Maureen Mahon, Associate Professor of Music at New York University about her book "Black Diamond Queens". Black Diamond Queens "draws on recordings, press coverage, archival materials, and interviews to document the history of African American Women in rock and roll between the 1950s and 1980s. Mahon details the musical contributions and cultural impact of Big Mama Thornton, Lavern Baker, Betty Davis, Tina Turner, Merry Clayton, Labelle, the Shirelles, and others demonstrating how dominant views of gender, race, sexuality, and genre affected their careers." Sponsored by the Cultural Centers

Black Voices: Scranton Stories Screening & Talk Back: Wednesday, February 21st, 6:30pm, Black Scranton Project Center for Arts and Culture.

Dialogue Series on Race, Racism, Identity and Privilege: "Afrofuturism“, Tuesday, February 27th, 8pm, Multicultural Center, 1st Floor DeNaples Center.

During February, we will be doing weekly posts about important artistic and cultural movements in connection with this year's Black History Month theme. For our dialogue on February 27th, we will engage students on a conversation about what is afrofuturism, how has it been embrace and its impact on artistic and cultural representation. Sponsored by the Cultural Centers
