The University of Scranton's response to hurricane victims in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida

Dear Members of the University Community,

We, the co-chairs of The University of Scranton’s Disaster Relief Steering Committee (DRSC) wanted to give you an update about the further formation of the DRSC and the ways we hope to engage our community in the ongoing relief efforts related to the recent hurricanes which battered our southern neighbors.  Our continued engagement with the ongoing hurricane relief efforts are made manifest by the Catholic and Jesuit values that animate us a community devoted to the common good.

We are currently forming the larger DRSC which will help our community discern the best ways we can help our sisters and brothers in need.  The committee’s task will be to assess the needs being presented to us by various constituencies and respond accordingly.  Many people from every sector of our university community have already contacted us and pledged their support for our future relief efforts.  Others have already donated time, money, and resources to the ongoing relief efforts in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and all the other states who will be assessing their damage in the coming days, weeks, and months.  The DRSC will communicate the various ways our community has discerned its engagement with the ongoing relief efforts as soon as we get more clarity about where our assistance is most urgently needed.

The national response to these natural disasters has moved the hearts and minds of the citizens of our nation and contributions to various relief efforts have been uplifting and edifying.  The cleanup from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma will be extensive and take many years.  Because of this, there will be even greater need for cooperation, planning, and implementing strategic efforts to target those areas and people who are most in need of our assistance.

As co-chairs of this university wide effort, we will be inviting a broad constituency of colleagues and students to help discern ways in which resources and funds can be raised and distributed appropriately for the maximum benefit for all those affected by the recent natural disasters.  The full committee will be formed by week’s end and will begin the long process of implementing appropriate avenues for delivering the aid we collect.

We have set up an account called Royal Response where the funds we collect can be stored until they can be distributed to the appropriate agencies who work directly with hurricane victims. Click here to make your donation for the hurricane victims or text RoyalResponse to 71777.

Please continue to pray for all those affected by these hurricanes and for all who are working diligently in difficult circumstances to bring healing and wholeness to those most in need.
