Oliver Strickland ‘13 and Donna Rupp ‘13 (CGCE) received the 2013 Alumni Loyalty and Service Awards during Class Night exercises on May 24. Both awardees were nominated for their meritorious efforts in enhancing student activities, promoting goodwill on campus, establishing rapport with the community, exhibiting academic excellence, and rendering exceptional service to The University of Scranton.
Strickland recently earned a degree in human resources and a minor in business. The level of his involvement with Student Government, Campus Ministry or The Aquinas certainly justified his nomination for this award. On campus, he is known as the Student Government president, but he has also found time to be an orientation assistant, committee chairman for Student Government where he organized Midnight Madness and established a newly titled student section to increase school spirit at athletic events, and writes a weekly column in The Aquinas about life, faith, positivity, success and humor.
Strickland was a student leader for Search Retreat and a freshman participant in FIRST, where he performed community service with children and elderly in low-income areas with 40 other freshmen. He was a peer facilitator for the international service trip to San Lucas, Guatemala, and volunteered on an International Service Trip to San Juan, Dominican Republic. He also spent his senior year spring break on a service trip with Habitat for Humanity to Atlantic Beach, Fla.
He serves the Alumni Society well through his roles as a member of the Class of 2013 Committee, where he is as a student representative of the University to alumni and other constituencies. By interacting with alumni on committees and at events, he engages alumni in the life of the University to help build and maintain connections between his classmates and the Alumni Society.
Rupp graduated in December of 2012 with a bachelor's degree in electronic commerce and a minor in operations and information management, having earned a 3.73 cumulative GPA. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program, with a concentration in operations information management.
Rupp has been taking classes at the University since spring 2004, earning her associate degree in business in 2008. She has consistently been recognized on the Dean’s List, and has been inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society, Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for adult learners in continuing higher education, and Omega Beta Sigma, the women’s business honor society.
She has been a full-time employee of the University since 2001, serving as faculty secretary of the Psychology Department. She received the Pro Deo Decennial Award in 2011, and was chosen to receive the Sursum Corda Award in 2012.
Rupp has served on The University of Scranton Wellness Committee since 2011. She has been a member of the Staff Senate, Staff Development Committee, and Information Resources Advisory Committee. She has also participated in the Fall Welcome/Freshman Move-in Day, and the House Calls, Building a Community programs since 2008.
Her community involvement has been focused on the NEPA affiliate of the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation since 2002. Her involvement with and chairing of many committees was recognized with her selection for the Spirit of Service Award in 2008, and as Volunteer of the Year in 2011. In 2012, Rupp was chosen as the honorary survivor chairperson for the NEPA Race for the Cure.
It is with both pride and pleasure that the Alumni Board of Governors has authorized this year’s Alumni Loyalty and Service Award to Strickland and Rupp, valued students, individuals and now valued alumnus.
