Each semester, purchasing textbooks from the bookstore can get expensive, especially for students in a difficult financial situation. “Students Helping Students,” formerly known as the Student Philanthropy Office, is awarding the second annual Textbook Scholarship to students in a tight money situation. Last fall, Students Helping Students (SHS) awarded 13 Scranton undergraduates with a $600 scholarship to spend exclusively at the campus bookstore. This year, SHS hopes to increase the scholarship recipient number to 17 students. To achieve this goal, SHS has worked with other departments on campus to host “Students Helping Students Week.”
Throughout the entire week of March 11-15, SHS will be hosting an ongoing "Where’s Waldo Trivia Challenge." SHS will choose a faculty or staff member each day to wear a red-and-white-striped scarf similar to the shirt Waldo wears. If you see this scarf, you have found Waldo! Once a student recognizes Waldo, they will be asked a simple trivia question about the University. Answer correctly, and receive a prize!
One of the most anticipated events of SHS week is “Minute To Win It,” which will take place on Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m. The competition will be held in sections B and C of the McIlhenney Ballroom on the fourth floor of the DeNaples Center. Pairs of students will compete in fast-paced, exciting mini-games, such as those featured on the TV show “Minute To Win It.” The first-place pair will win $50 Visa gift cards. Other prizes consist of Scranton memorabilia and door prizes for spectators. The entrance fee for both spectators and participants is $1 or the donation of a used textbook. Snacks and refreshments will also be provided.
On Friday, March 15, Royals will have the opportunity to bet on donated Scranton memorabilia at the second annual “Their Trash, Our Treasure” auction. This event starts at 6:30 p.m. in the McIlhenney Ballroom. Light refreshments will also be served. This event is sure to impress, so be sure to dress the part and get your wallets ready for some cool Scranton decorations to hang in your dorm room, apartment or off-campus residence! All bidding will start at only $1 and all those in attendance will be entered into a raffle for several door prizes.
At all of the events during SHS week, donations and entrance fees will be accepted via cash, credit card or Royal Card. By participating in any of these events, you are helping out your fellow students and having a blast at the same time! So come on out and take a chance at any of the events. You may even walk away with a great prize. Good luck and have fun!
