The Office of Equity and Diversity at The University of Scranton cordially invites all students, faculty and staff to attend our fifth annual Diversity Fair - "Unlearn: Uncovering and Unlearning Bias." This event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the DeNaples Center, fourth-floor ballroom. There is no cost for admission, participation in the educational activities and lectures, or food and refreshments. There will be 1-2 vendors present with various items for sale.
This year’s theme is geared towards uncovering and unlearning the various biases that can shape our world. Biases can often be the root cause of harassment, bullying and discrimination. The Diversity Fair invites the University community, neighbors, and friends to examine their own personal biases, determine where these biases came from, and practice “unlearning” them. Educational workshops on bias and micro-aggressions, sensitivity awareness, ableism, and Native American culture will be featured. "Encounter Point," a short film highlighting the efforts of some Israelis and Palestinians who are coming together to end violence and honor their lost loved ones will be shown in the morning and afternoon. Activities and exhibits centered on this theme will fill the ballroom. The annual fair offers participants the opportunity to explore the given theme from the unique perspectives of diverse groups and topics including, gender, ability/disability, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and religious beliefs.
Of special interest this year is a workshop featuring internationally known comedians Dean Obeidallah and Scott Blakeman of the "StandUp For Peace" World Comedy Tour. They will be providing a free workshop at 11:30 a.m. in the DeNaples Center for all students. More information on these comedians can be found on their website, http://www.standupforpeace.com/.
The attendees will receive a drawstring sportpack and a "Passport to Diversity" upon arrival. By visiting the informational tables and participating in activities, they will receive a stamp from each station. After getting the required number of stamps, they will get a Diversity Fair V T-shirt.
