Former professional basketball player John Amaechi, an experienced psychologist and human rights activist, will speak at the 'A Day of Inclusion' at the University on Thursday, Oct. 18.

"A Day of Inclusion" featuring John Amaechi, former NBA star, will be offered to the campus and surrounding community in an effort to promote an inclusive, culturally competent, and mindful environment, free of bullying and harassment. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the DeNaples Center ballroom. Amaechi, now living in London, England, played professional basketball for the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz before retiring in 2003. His book, “Man in the Middle” tells of his difficult journey from an overweight, British bookworm to NBA player while struggling to understand his sexuality in a masculine driven sports culture. He is a graduate of Penn State University and is currently working on his Ph.D. in psychology. Amaechi is an experienced psychologist, educator, social entrepreneur, motivational speaker and human rights activist in the US and Europe. For more information on Amaechi, visit www.johnamaechi.com.

As the topic of bullying and teen depression headlines our news these days, please encourage all students, parents and teachers to attend this unique program. Amaechi comes to us as a result of collaboration between the Office of the Provost, the Scranton Inclusion Initiative, the Office of Equity and Diversity, Scranton Athletics Department and Employee Wellness Program.
