The following items highlight the many alumni events and initiatives at The University of Scranton.

50-year Class Participated in Commencement Exercises


Five members of the class of 1962 marked the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their graduation by marching as delegates in the academic procession of the annual undergraduate Commencement Exercises held May 27. University President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J. presented the delegates with 50-year medals immediately before the Commencement. The 50-year class will gather on campus to celebrate together during Reunion Weekend. 2012 Alumni Loyalty and Service Award Winners Announced at Class Night

Two members of the class of 2012, Adam J. Gault and James K. Donovan (CGCE), received the 2012 Alumni Loyalty and Service Awards during Class Night exercises on May 25. Both awardees were nominated for their meritorious efforts in enhancing student activities, promoting good will on campus, establishing rapport with the community, exhibiting academic excellence and rendering exceptional service to the University of Scranton.

Gault served the Alumni Society well through his roles as a President’s Alumni Liaison and member of the Class of 2012 Committee, where he was a student representative of the University to alumni and other constituencies. On campus, Gault was the 2012 Student Government President and an active member in University Ministries. Donovan served as a committee member, secretary, and vice president of the Dexter Hanley Student Organization, continuing as vice president and treasurer of its successor, the Graduate and Continuing Education Student Organization. He has also worked with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program on campus.

It is with both pride and pleasure that the Alumni Board of Governors has authorized this year’s Alumni Loyalty and Service Award to Adam Gault and James Donovan, Class of 2012, valued students, individuals, and now valued alumnus.

Frank J. O’Hara Awards to be Presented


The O’Hara Awards was named for the late administrator, Frank O'Hara, who served The University of Scranton for 53 years. For a complete list of Alumni Reunion Weekend events,

Eight individuals will be presented with the 2012 Frank O’Hara Award during Alumni Reunion Weekend. The O’Hara Award is the highest award bestowed jointly by the University and the Alumni Society for outstanding achievement in a particular field or endeavor.

Join us on Friday, June 8, for the 32nd annual awards dinner and ceremony. It will be held at 5:30 p.m. Dinner and Cocktail Reception to follow.

This year’s honorees and the categories for which they will receive their award are:

  • James M. Basta ’61, (posthumously) Tampa, Florida (Government Service)
  • Lee A. DeHihns, III, ’67, Marietta, Georgia (Law)
  • Judith C. Dunn ’77, Arlington, Virginia (Law)
  • Mary Beth Hamorski, V.M.D. ’82, Lebanon, New Jersey (Medicine)
  • James Kane, M.D. '46, S. Barrington, Illinois (Medicine)
  • Ellen Duggan Pappert ’87, Plymouth Meeting (Community Service)
  • Richard H. Passon, Ph.D., Waverly (University Service)
  • Francis G. Tracy ’52, College Park, Maryland (Education)

Young Alumni Prepare to Welcome the Class of 2012


While the Class of 2007 will celebrate their five-year Reunion this week, alumni will be invited this summer to gather in New York City on Thursday, June 21, Philadelphia on Thursday, July 26, and Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Aug. 16, for the 2012 Welcome Parties. The welcome parties are designed to give the class of 2012 a warm summer welcome to the alumni society. To RSVP for the welcome parties, visit

Regional Summer Planning Begins

Alumni volunteers have already started planning summer gatherings for fellow Scranton grads in their regions. Alumni in Chesapeake, South Central Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Lehigh Valley are set to attend July baseball games, and New York alumni have scheduled their baseball outing at Yankee stadium in August. Theatre Reunion Set for Aug. 11

The Office of Alumni Relations, the Department of English and Theatre and the University Players are planning a reunion! The event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11, and will feature a tour of campus, cocktails, dinner and plenty of fun. Watch for registration information.
