The University of Scranton has named Harry R. Dammer, Ph.D., associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Dammer is a professor in the University’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Criminology. He joined the faculty at the University in 2002. He is the author or co-author of seven books including “Religion in Corrections” (American Correctional Association, 1999), “The Offender in the Community” (with Todd R. Clear, Wadsworth/Thomson Press, 2003) and “Comparative Criminal Justice Systems” (with Jay S. Albanese, Cengage/Thomson Press, 2013). He has also published or co-published more than 40 articles, chapters, manuals, and professional reports on a variety of criminal justice topics, including corrections, international justice and religion in prison. In 1993-94, and the spring of 2009, Dr. Dammer was awarded Fulbright Scholarships to lecture and conduct research in Germany.

Dr. Dammer has 16 years of experience as a department chair, serving at both Scranton and Niagara University. During his time as chair of the University’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Criminology, he developed collaborations with programs across the University, reinstituted the department’s community advisory board and substantially revised its curricula. The department also received certification for the criminal justice major from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and is currently one of just eight undergraduate programs in the nation with this distinction.

At Scranton, Dr. Dammer served as the faculty representative to the NCAA, as a faculty fellow in the Office of Educational Assessment, and as a member of the Steering Committee and chair of the Mission Implementation Sub-Committee for the University’s last Middle States review.

In 2011, Dr. Dammer received the University’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Advancing Interdisciplinary Study, and in 2016 he received the Faculty Award for Excellence in University Service and Leadership.

Dr. Dammer has also participated in many initiatives that support the mission of Catholic and Jesuit Universities, including the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education, the Ignatian Colleagues Program, and the Catholic Social Tradition, Learning, and Research Initiative.

 Dr. Dammer earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dayton and his Ph.D. from Rutgers University.
