University Plans Veterans Day Events

Nov 3, 2016

Members of The University of Scranton’s Veterans Advocacy Committee planed a series of events for Veterans Day, which include an open house and dedication for the University’s new Veterans and ROTC Resource Lounge, located on the first floor of Hyland Hall. First row from left: Crystal Ondrick, assistant director of financial aid; Lt. Col. (Ret) Joe Wetherell, admissions events specialist; Susan Elczyna, Ph.D., faculty specialist, Nursing Department; Chris Whitney, director, career development; and Bob Zelno, Veterans Club moderator. Second row from left: Lt. Col. Lars Wendt, professor military science/ROTC; Jason Schwass, assistant director of student internships, Kania School of Management and assistant moderator of the Veterans Club; and Bernard Gilligan, D.N.P., faculty specialist, Nursing Department.

The University of Scranton has planned several public events on campus to celebrate Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Events include an inter-faith prayer service over a “Field of Flags” on Founders Green at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the Commons Flag Terrace (corner of Linden Street and Monroe Avenue).

The newly constructed Veterans and ROTC Resource Lounge in Hyland Hall will be dedicated at a 2:15 p.m. ceremony. The former veterans’ lounge on campus was located in the recently demolished Loyola Hall. The new lounge will serve as a place on campus where current student veterans and ROTC members can congregate, provide information to new veterans, or even study. The dedication ceremony, once concluded, will transition to an Open House of the new facility from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Veterans Day events will conclude with a 7 p.m. lecture about “Cultivating Awareness by Living Mindfully” by Phillip Sallavanti, a mindfulness teacher and practitioner. Sallavanti works to provide stress reduction teachings to children and adults, as well as the educational community, human service providers and those in medical professions. The former director of the Child Care Information Services of Lackawanna County, Sallavanti has studied at various universities to design a course that includes addressing fears and anxieties with mindfulness. The event is sponsored by Lockheed Martin and will be held in the Lynett Auditorium and the Veterans and ROTC Resource Lounge in Hyland Hall. The workshop is open to the public, but reservations are required. Call 570-941-4334 or email veteransclub@scranton.edu to make a reservation.

All three Veterans Day events, presented free of charge and open to the public, are sponsored by the University’s Veterans Club and the Veterans Advocacy Committee.
