Expert to Discuss Impact of Election on Middle East and NEPA at Nov. 9 Lecture
Author Avi Melamed, an independent Israel-Middle East strategic intelligence analyst, will discuss the history and evolution of events in the Middle East, its impact on a local and regional level and what can be expected in the future from the next U.S. president, at a lecture titled “Inside the Middle East – A New President Requires a New Understanding of the Middle East.” Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the second floor Kane Forum of Leahy Hall at The University of Scranton.
Avi Melamed, an independent Israel-Middle East strategic intelligence analyst, will visit The University of Scranton to share his perspective in a talk titled “Inside the Middle East – A New President Requires a New Understanding of the Middle East.” Melamed will discuss the history and evolution of events in the Middle East and its impact on the local and regional level, especially in the Scranton area. With the results of the presidential election known the night before the talk, Melamed will also discuss the anticipated influence the next president of the United States will have on the Middle East going forward.
The lecture, which is open to the public and free of charge, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the second floor James M. Kane, M.D. ’46 Forum of Edward R. Leahy Jr. Hall (corner of Jefferson Avenue and Linden Street).
A Salisbury Fellow of Intelligence and Middle East Affairs for the Eisenhower Institute with offices at Gettysburg College and Washington, D.C., Melamed is an expert on the current affairs in the Arab and Muslim world and their impact on Israel and the Middle East. He is a former Israeli intelligence official and senior official on Arab affairs. An Israeli Jew, Melamed is fluent in Arabic, English and Hebrew, with a unique understanding of Arab society and culture. In his decades of public service, he has held high-risk government, senior advisory, intelligence and counter-terrorist intelligence positions in Arab cities and communities throughout the region on behalf of the Israeli government agencies.
Melamed’s newest book, “Inside the Middle East: Making Sense of the Most Dangerous and Complicated Region on Earth,” offers a unique insight into the Arab world, challenges widely-accepted perceptions and provides a gripping and uniquely enlightening guide to make sense of the events unfolding on the region. He is also the founder and creator of “Feenjan – Israel Speaks Arabic,” a non-profit initiative that presents contemporary Israeli society and culture to the Arab world in Arabic, and serves as an online platform for Israelis and Arabs to discover and discuss issues of common interest.
The lecture is presented by the University’s academic deans: Brian P. Conniff, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Charles E. Kratz, dean of the Library and Information Fluency; Michael Mensah, Ph.D., dean of the Kania School of Management; and Debra A. Pellegrino, Ed.D. dean of the Panuska College of Professional Studies.
