Spanish Guitarist Francesc de Paula Soler Perform for Hispanic Heritage Month at Scranton

Maestro Soler, described by The Washington Post as playing “dazzling solos,” will perform at The University of Scranton on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in Brennan Hall’s Pearn Auditorium. 

The renowned international artist Francesc de Paula Soler will perform at The University of Scranton on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in Brennan Hall’s Pearn Auditorium. The performance is free of charge and open to the public.

Soler, known as the “Poet of the Guitar” due to his unique ability to create powerful emotional reactions with his music, will present traditional Spanish and Latin American music, as well as contemporary music for the guitar. The performance will include jazz, swing, “bossa,” be-bop, and blues, as well as an arrangement that combines both blues and rock to create surprising effects from the guitar.

Soler has spent his life studying music, specifically the guitar. At the age of 11, he played in the widely renowned “Conservatorio Superior de Música” in Barcelona, Spain, and received the highest honors. He continued to study guitar with both the father of the modern classical guitar, Andrés Segovia, and one of the finest virtuoso classical guitarists of the twentieth century, Narciso Yepes.

Soler has received numerous honors and awards, including a Tribute of the U.S. House of Representatives (2001, 2002, 2004), Honorary Citizen of Dallas (1988), Diploma of the U.S. Military Academy (2001), and a Diploma of the Institute of Fundamental Theology from the Society of Jesus in Spain (2015).

The performance, part of the University’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, is sponsored by the Department of World Languages and Culture, Office of Equity and Diversity, Latin American Studies, and the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences.
