University Faculty Members Honored for Teaching, Scholarship and Service

Twelve University of Scranton faculty members were honored recently with Provost Faculty Enhancement awards for excellence in teaching, scholarship or service. The Provost’s office and Provost Advisory Group selected the recipients from a pool of candidates nominated by academic deans and department chairs.

Brian Carpenter, Ph.D., received the Excellence in Scholarly Publication Award, presented to faculty members who have attained distinction in scholarship or creative activity. Dr. Carpenter, professor of accounting, joined the faculty at Scranton in 1987. He earned a MBA from The University of Scranton and a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University.

Rebecca Spirito Dalgin, Ph.D., and Meghan A. Rich, Ph.D., received the Excellence in Integrating Diversity in Learning Award, presented to faculty members who merge international issues and perspectives into the curriculum. Dr. Dalgin, associate professor of counseling and human services, joined the faculty at Scranton in 2005. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Quinnipiac University and a master’s degree and doctorate from Syracuse University. Dr. Rich, associate professor of sociology, criminal justice and criminology, joined the faculty at the University in 2007. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a doctorate from the University of Delaware.

Harry R. Dammer, Ph.D., and Vanessa A. Silla, Ed.D., received the Excellence for University Service and Leadership Award, which recognizes faculty members who have contributed service to the University community, particularly those who demonstrate academic leadership by effectively mentoring their junior colleagues. Dr. Dammer, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice and Criminology, joined Scranton’s faculty in 2002. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Dr. Silla, associate professor of education, joined the University’s faculty in 2005. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Scranton. She earned a doctorate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Robert C. Giambatista, Ph.D., received the Excellencei in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award, presented to faculty members who enhance student learning. Dr. Giambatista, associate professor of management, marketing and entrepreneurship, joined the faculty at Scranton in 2013. He earned a bachelors’ degree and master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

Ioannis N. Kallianiotis, Ph.D., and Jamie H. Trnka, Ph.D., received the Excellence In Advancing Global Learning Award, presented to faculty members who integrate international issues and perspectives into the curriculum. Dr. Kallianiotis, professor of economics and finance, joined Scranton’s faculty in 1990. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Thessalonika, Greece. He earned two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York. Dr. Trnka, associate professor of world languages and cultures and chair of the Department of Latin American Studies and Women’s Studies, joined the faculty at Scranton in 2006. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Joseph E. Kraus, Ph.D., received the Excellence in Advancing Interdisciplinary Study Award, which honors faculty members who cross boundaries between disciplines and departments to create innovative pedagogies that enhance students’ learning and prepare them for real-world challenges. Dr. Kraus, professor of English and theatre and director of the University’s Honors Program, joined the faculty at the University in 2004. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree from Columbia University and a doctorate from Northwestern University.

Daniel P. Haggerty, Ph.D., received the Excellence in Adapting Classic Principles of Jesuit Pedagogy into the Curriculum: The Magis Award. Dr. Haggerty, professor of philosophy, serves as director of the University’s Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Honors Program. He joined the faculty of Scranton in 2005. He earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University.

In addition, part-time faculty members Ruth DeSantis, Department of Communication, and Timothy Holland, Department of Health Administration and Human Resources, were honored with Excellence in Teaching Awards.
