The University of Scranton Honors Susan Trussler

Susan Trussler, Ph.D., Fulbright advisor and associate professor of economics/finance at The University of Scranton, was honored with the John L. Earl III Award for service to the University, the faculty and the wider community. This award is presented annually to a member of the University community who demonstrates the spirit of generosity and dedication that the late Dr. John Earl, a distinguished professor of history, exemplified during his years at Scranton from 1964 to 1996.

Under Dr. Trussler’s leadership, the University has enjoyed a long tradition of success with students earning prestigious Fulbright scholarships. The University has been recognized among the nation’s top producers of U.S. Fulbright students for 10 consecutive years in lists published annually by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

“Long before I considered coming to Scranton, I knew of its well-deserved reputation as a Fulbright powerhouse. Now I understand why,” said University of Scranton President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., at the ceremony announcing the award. “Just this year, for example, we can boast five national Fulbright semi-finalists, chosen from over 10,000 applicants nationwide.”

Since 1972, a total of 150 Scranton students have been awarded grants in the competitions administered by the Institute of International Education, including Fulbrights.

Dr. Trussler joined the faculty of the University in 1985. During her tenure at the University, she has served as president of the Faculty Senate, an officer in the Faculty Union and as a member of the Board on Rank and Tenure, the University’s Planning Committee and the Kania School of Management’s Leadership Committee. She also developed the University’s International Business Program and serves as its director.

In addition, Dr. Trussler serves as current president of the board of directors of the Howard Gardner Multiple Intelligence Charter School in Scranton, and has served as president of Women of the Academy of International Business, a worldwide organization of faculty and professionals in International Business.

Dr. Trussler earned her bachelor’s degree from the London School of Economics and her master’s and Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Trussler resides in South Abington Township with her husband, David Black, Ph.D., a professor of philosophy at the University, and their daughter Emma Black, a senior majoring in journalism and electronic media at the University.
